Robert Kitts trained as a painter and sculptor at the Slade School of Fine Art (University College London) from 1955-1958. He was elected fellow of the Royal Society of Artists in 1961. Kitts also worked as a film director and producer in London for the BBC. He was eventually lured away from painting by his love of television, a new medium at the time. Kitts created a documentary film for BBC TV called The Divided Eye, in which he shows his appreciation for both the static and moving image and the relationship between the two.
